Steel shortages during the Second World War inspired the US Navy to explore the use of alternate materials. Richard O. Hunt worked with the navy to explore the possibilities of a new material- fiberglass. After the war, Hunt built fiberglass pleasure boats- and in the 1960’s teamed up with naval architect Willam Crealock to create a design with a “deep forefoot” that helps Offshore Yachts negotiate rough seas while maintaining a relatively comfortable ride. Contemporary Offshore Yachts are available in lengths ranging from 54 to 90 feet. Most feature a pilothouse design.
